Growing
up in New England, I spent my summers swimming in lakes, as my father
was a competitive swimmer. In high school, I was drawn to running
track and learned about the need for specific training. At college in
Colorado, I discovered rock climbing and mountain biking and further
learned the need for specialized training. Eventually, I found my
way back to New England and met my husband in a bike shop where I
worked as a mechanic and began mountain bike racing in
1989. Since then I have raced competitively on the road as
a Cat 2, cyclo-cross as a Cat 1 and on the track. After moving to
Seattle, I became a professional mountain bike racer and raced for
Raleigh Mountain Bike Team and Plymouth/Ellsworth Mountain Bike Team.
After a break to have two children, I now race for the ByrneInvent
Cycling Team.
My
interest in sport and human performance contributed to my desire to
understand more about how the human body works and why at times, it
fails. That curiosity led me to earn a Master Degree in Physical
Therapy from the University of Puget Sound in 1997. Since then I
have worked in an orthopedic outpatient clinic treating a wide variety
of patients from geriatrics to young athletes. Some areas I have
focused on are bike fit and body assessment, gait and posture analysis,
core stability exercises, neuro-muscular re-education, and custom home
programs.
